Elephant Transits Home
The Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home was established in 1995 for the purpose of looking after abandoned elephant calves within the park. A total of nine calves, on two occasions in 1998 and 2000, with another eight calves in 2002, were released in the park when old enough to fend for themselves. many into the Uda Walawe National Park.. A boisterous group of around 30 juvenile and teenage pachyderms gets fed four times a day. Unlike the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage, you can't get up close and personal with the elephants, but feeding time is still a lot of fun.
Udawalawe National Park
The national park covers 119 square miles. It surrounds the Uda Walawe reservoir. Herds of Elephants can be seen along the banks of the Uda Walawe River along with small herds of deer that can be seen frequently. Wild boar and crocodiles could be a more rare sight but it's the leopard and the sloth bear that is very rare and a chance only a few will get to see. Uda Walawa is one of the more recently established National Parks declared with the main intension of conserving the catchments areas of the Uda Walawa reservoir. Up on completion of the jeep safari return to the hotel.
